Every day in June, I'll be drawing a different character. It seemed fitting to start off with a bang, and with one of the most intriguing characters on television.
Why, Benjamin Linus, of course!
I fell in love with Ben (er, Henry) the moment he bled and sobbed his way onto the screen. There was something about his pointy features and piercing eyes that seemed too normal to be anything but devious and cunning. Oh, and the tragic tales and twists of fate, and the moment he stepped forth as the leader, and how we all knew his trickery and yet wanted (or were compelled) to be taken by it. Oh, I loved him from the start...
He's a character that makes the most out of his centric episodes, too. The rare looks into his past and future provide some of the most compelling moments on Lost... who can forget young Ben standing face to face with Richard, or adult Ben smirking oh-so-subtly as he walked away from a grieving Sayid, or a sobbing Ben closing the eyes of his murdered daughter, whose fate he signed?
He's ambiguous, he's ominous and fragile and badass, he's human and 'other' and just a bit alien about the eyes... he can take a punch (and has, on several occasions) yet bruises quite tastefully, he can be ruthless and sympathetic and devastated and vile and murderous and manipulative and broken and sweet and infatuated and a cooker of hams, and you can believe him in any face he happens to be wearing.
Is he a good guy? A bad guy? Is he telling the truth, or is everything a lie? Who is the real Ben?
Played to perfection by the always talented Michael Emerson, Ben is one of my favourite reasons to tune into Lost. Season 5 should hold some interesting twists and turns for Ben, and I can hardly wait. A pessimistic voice within has already convinced me that he won't survive, but I hope he at least goes as a dignified and resolved hero.
At the end of the day, I believe he is a good guy, despite all the evil he has done. Is he just a good liar, or do you believe it too?
Do you like Ben? If so, why? What do you think the next season holds in store?
Oh, and on a final note... what an oddly sexy man. Seriously.
Do you mind telling me how you're so damn good at drawing the LOST cast? I'm kidding, but these are all great, The Lostie A Day A Thon was a stroke of genius...
This picture has inspired a lot of my art, as well as made me want to stalk Micheal Emerson. I often like using the style of noses you draw. I feel like a stalker now. >_>
Of course Ben has to be first. I agree with everything you say. Every. Single. Word. You describe Ben perfectly, and way more eloquently than I ever could.
I don't understand why nobody likes Ben. as you said, he is very oddly sexual. and by oddly, i mean extremely. There is something in his calm twisted features that just makes you want to tackle him.

I'm pretty sure the closest we ever got, or WILL ever get, to seeing the real Ben died when Sayid shot that little kid in the jungle. The Ben we see in all other scenes is one giant ball of angst and opposites and a whooole lotta crazy thrown in. And that is probably why we love him so much. He's just a fantastically realized character.
It's a good thing Lost HAS so many great characters, because otherwise we'd have all probably given up on it ages ago.
Your girlfriend leave ya? Take it out on Ben!
Too much work? Punch Ben and pretend he's your boss!
No one understands you? Beat the crap out of Ben!

If I could only reach you,
If I could make you smile,

This is my timey-wimey detector. It goes ding when there's stuff.
