"Being told what to do was my life for four years... I didn't like it much either."
There are some characters that you need to understand to appreciate, and definitely to admire. An initial impression leaves you with the wrong idea, and it is easy to dismiss too quickly. Luckily, if you can stick it out, the truth reveals itself, and the story is richer because of that.
And so we have Sun!
Sun is full of surprises. When she first pops onto Lost, we see her as a seemingly bullied woman, under the thumb of her domineering husband. She looks down, she buttons up her top with a look of defeat when demanded to. She looks weak and broken. Initially, there was nothing impressive about her... you can't even look her in the eyes.
When her backstory starts to spill out, her on-Island state becomes a jarring contrast. A vibrant woman, an epic love story, betrayal, devotion, violence, privilege, loss, floofy dogs, and most importantly, strength. A very strong sense of self, and entitlement. We see the gradual shifts in her relationship with Jin, their initial on-Island friction. Happiness lost. Things started to fall into place.
I guess it comes down to development. Some characters are instantly loved, and some are loved and later lackluster. Sun, however, is the kind that gradually grew on me. Her character was revealed and eventually reclaimed, though altered. What a contrast between early season-1 Sun, and the warrior woman staring down her father and cooly delivering the news that he just got his ass handed to him on a platter? BY HER. Owned.
Sun was always a strong character, willing to do what needed to be done. It was never an overt thing, though; it was slowly revealed, making the change feel more prominent. She lacks the obvious bravado of Kate, but that doesn't make her any less active.
The Sun/Jin romance is simultaneously typical and truly unique, and so fulfilling. Despite his initial doucheyness, the truth about Jin is shown... and it's hard to resist the two of them.
She's not as innocent as she seems. She's not as meek or weak as she seems. She much smarter than she lets on... and, every once and a while, she's good for a good paddle-to-the-head knockout. Although she's more likely to kick your ass with wit and highly paid lawyers, she's not afraid of getting her hands dirty. And she gardens.
A well-rounded woman if I've ever seen one. Sun might be sweet, but don't you ever dare get in her way.
i love how you said that its easy to love characters such as Hurley, but you really have to dig deep through layers to figure out who Sun is. That takes true acting skills! All my friends are always like "dude, why do u like Sun?" and ive never been able to answer. ill be sure to say that about how complex she is now. GREAT COLORING! definately my fav role on Lost. Such a strong woman.
Sun-Jin was always OTP for me. I think it was the fact that they didn't speak English with the rest of the island was what made them truly awesome. While everybody is running around speaking English and Australian, Sun and Jin are just sitting going, "What's going on?"
I think Sun was awesome until she got rescued, then I really don't know what happened. Embittered Sun just doesn't work for me. I think it might be just that Yunjin Kim isn't that great at embittered Sun, but maybe I just don't like embittered people. SUNxJIN FOREVER!!!!
Sun is a great character. She goes through so many transformations over the course of the show, and there is no way that she's even close to done evolving. I just hope she reunites with Jin soon...
Sun was a character that you real needed to follow all of the backstory (and forward-story) to get. Some of the characters you can tell who they are right away - like Hurley is a loveable goof. Sun has layers that are revealed slowly. And she has become quite tough, because she needed to be.
SUNxJIN FOREVER!!!!
And she finally jumped on the bandwagon of giving Ben concussions.
