The hostiles. The Island natives. Them. The Others.

The whispers in the wind, making you think that the insanity is finally setting in. The masters of trickery, of ruse and deception, of motives and origins most unclear.

The bad guys? The good guys? The kidnappers of children, or saviors? Vicious, mysterious, and 'different.'

The wearers of art-kid clothing and comfy shoes and eaters of ham and participants of book clubs. The smiling faces of suburbia and the chilling, cold blooded killers in the dark.

An ancient line, peppered by new recruits, the faithful, the supernatural, the scientific, the mundane.

My favorite 'mystery' of the Island has always been the Others. Oh, the elaborate ruses (Tom wearing a beard, the shanty town, the list to get Jack... can't these people just ask nicely?) They can look downright normal and cheerful, but there's always something different about them.

The reveal of new Otherton in the season 3 premier was one of my favorite Lost moments. It was just a whole new can of WTF. The scraggly, vicious, whispering baby-napping Others suddenly took on a new light. What, exactly, is their story?

We know they have a vaguely hermit crab-esque mentality; they moved into Dharmaville and began having book clubs. We know they are prone to drastic mood swings; sweetly smiling Ethan greeting Juliet versus the badass, CREEPY mofo from season 1 (not to be excessively violent, but I wanted them to cut of his head or burn him or something after he was killed. Total vampire man.)

They have different purposes and missions, different faces, and sometimes different pasts. Their mythology is deep, mysterious and painfully complex.

In conclusion: WHO THE BLOODY HELL ARE THE OTHERS??

*ahem*

Any definite answers? Theories? Hopes and dreams for season 6? Well, (and let's all say it together, kids!)
