The Lostie-a-Day-a-Thon : [link]

"I've worse things to fear than what's in the jungle. What I did today - what I almost did - I swore to do never again. If I can't keep that promise, I have no right to be here. "

Lost can be a violent show. There are shootings, stabbings, strangulations, explosions, and the odd animal attack. While some local badasses prefer the subtlety of dynamite (coughLocke) or the slickness of a firearm (coughSawyer), the truly terrifying choose to use their own bodies as a weapon.

Sayid broke a man's neck in between his thighs.

He strangled a man with an IV.... his IV... while still in the hospital room where he almost died.

The hospital room where he almost died after fighting off approx. 49 men, killing one with a dishwasher, before being pumped full of enough drugs to kill an obese elephant.

...

Of all the blood splattered, sloshed and sprayed on Sayid, how much of it has actually been his?

Sayid is a badass through and through. Despite a calm, cool and logical demenour, a raging Jack Bauer burns beneath. The man can fix anything, oozes intelligence, and can kick ass in any given situation. HOLY SHITE. Brains and brawn in one awesome package.

He's not a warm and cuddly fellow, and he's not a shining hero. He has a dark, dark past, and all of his attempts at happiness get torn apart in a bloody mess. Part of him desperately wants a beautiful life, but part of him believes he doesn't deserve it. He's troubled, but never lets his demons get in the way of getting the job done. He uses that darkness to finish things, especially when no one else can.

Sayid is an intense character. I've always been rather fascinated (and sometimes scared) of him. The true horror lies in the fact that he ISN'T a sociopath. The role of torturer was forced upon him, and his deeds have haunted him ever since. He doesn't want to be bad, but cannot escape his talents. Moral dilemmas abound everywhere Sayid strolls.

I was quite angered when Sayid shot down little Ben, but the pain in his eyes made me realize his thought process. The killing of a child was, even in his hardened state, absolutely abhorrent to him... but, he believed he would be saving lives by his action. Ohhh, poor naive Sayid. Things are never that easy for you.

The poor man needs a stable love interest FOR MORE THAN A WEEK AND A HALF. Seriously. Maybe if his girlfriends and wives weren't constantly being killed off, he'd be a little less psycho. When he saw Nadia again... ohhh, my heart swelled. That sort of joy doesn't last long around Sayid. If he survives into season 6 (and seriously, do you think a bullet killed him off?), I hope the unfortuante bastard gets a lady friend. I dunno... Kate? Kayid would be the only pairing with the crazychick that would actually make sense. They could tromp in the jungle and knock people out.

Of all of the 'Good Guys', Sayid is the one that most definitely tests that title. He's not a grinning, slap-happy protagonist. He's a deep, adult, complex, confused and intense character (which is why I love him so much.) Sexy, strong, smart, and that subtle sort of insane, Sayid's bloodstained journey has not been a particularly cheerful one. Hopefully, redemption will find him... and happiness, too.
